Ganvie is a lake village in Benin, lying in Lake Nokoue, near Cotonou. Also known as the « Venice of Africa », it is probably the largest lake village of the continent. At the time I took this picture, the 30,000 inhabitants were mostly making a living of fishing. Tourism is now said to be booming. March 1991.
Ganvié est un village lacustre du Bénin, situé sur le lac Nokoué près de Cotonou. Surnommé « la Venise de l’Afrique », c’est probablement le plus grand village lacustre du continent. A l’époque de la photo, les 30 000 habitants vivaient surtout de la pêche. On dit que le tourisme se développe. Mars 1991.
